Cleaning our homes is a necessary task that can become tiresome and wearing for many. We clean the same things on a daily and weekly basis, only to have to start the whole process again as soon as it’s finished. Some of us do take pleasure in cleaning but for many, it is stressful and undesirable work.

So who does this work and how long do they spend? We’ve investigated cleaning around the world to find out. Some cultures spend less time cleaning than others and most have their own favourite products and tools to do the job. Something that seems to stand out wherever you are in the world is that women do most of the cleaning work. With gender roles changing, we’re surprised the work isn’t spread more evenly across the genders.
